Khwaja Ahmad Abbas was an Indian film director, scenarist and journalist. He was born in Panipat, Punjab, British India (now Haryana, India). Abbas graduated from Aligarh Muslim University in 1933. Originally, Abbas was a journalist, writing for a New Delhi newspaper, the Aligargh Opinion. Abbas served as a film critic for the Bombay Chronicle from 1935-1947. Abbas is perhaps most famous in journalism for writing The Last Page, the longest-running political column in India's history.
His directorial debut was the realist Dharti Ke Lal in 1945 for the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). He wrote the scripts for Awaara, Shri 420, Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani, Jagte Raho, Mera Naam Joker, Bobby and Henna. He wrote the 'Last Page' political column in the 'Bombay Chronicle' from 1941-86.
