rating: 3 Quotenot very good, but not that badQuote
The main reason that I'm giving this flick three stars is because Scream, Halloween and Scary Movie all deserve at least two stars more. Another reason is that so many of the characters are such obnoxious jerks that I couldn't wait for them to die. On the other hand, most of the actors did a good job and some of them were very easy on the eyes. It's nice seeing Sarah Michelle Gellar again. Ladies and gays will appreciate the shower scene with Ryan Phillippe. The music was good. Some of the scenes will help you understand parts of the hilarious teen slasher spoof Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday The 13th. I'm not ashamed to rent this flick, but I wouldn't buy it. If you're expecting originality you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting a faithful adaptation of the superb book this is based on you'll be let down. If you just want to sit down to enjoy a entertaining movie, that is well-acted (the supporting cast (Bridgette Wilson in particular) do as good a job as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Philippe & Freddie Prince Jr.) you've come to the right page.

Four friends run over a man & dump his dead (?) body into the ocean after their drunken 4th July celebrations. One year later almost to the day, one of the friends receives a letter & the game is on. As it draws to 4th July the letters escalate to hair cutting, disappearing bodies & hit and runs.

I must mention that the main `stalk n slash' scene is gripping, edge-of-your-seat stuff. I wouldn't really call I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER a slasher though; it's more of a suspense thriller. The film focuses revenge.

The film relies on tension & building suspense instead of blood and gore, like classics such as HALLOWEEN. I'm not saying that I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is on that level, but it is well done. The film is better then it's chief comparison SCREAM because it seems more realistic.

One observation; I'm quite sure that the film had an 18 certificate in cinemas, while the DVD is certified as a 15. This makes me wonder over missing footage. I don't want to give anything away, but the killer has collected newspaper articles that detail something that seemingly has very little to do with the given plot. Just little things like that are winding me up. It doesn't spoil the plot or anything like that, so it isn't really important I guess.

Also, Anne Hecht has a seemingly pointless supporting role. So where has any left out footage gone? It's not included as an extra. Are they going to bring out 50 DVD editions of this or something?

This film starts fairly well, but then it becomes another routine slasher. I suppose if something is worth doing in Hollywood, it's worth overdoing. The best thing about this movie is John Debney's suspenseful score, which makes the movie watchable. The enhanced 2.35:1 DVD is of high quality. May 13, 2008

This movie is basically a retreading of familiar ground, and has the same premise as most other slasher movies: there is a crazed killer on the loose and a group of friends are being bumped off one by one. The story is rather contrived and involves four friends (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillipe) running over a man during a drunken night of partying. However, instead of doing the right thing and informing the police of what happened, they decide to cover it up and forget the entire event. Of course, as is usual in this genre, bad things follow. The member of the cast who performs best (though it isn't hard to compete with Freddie Prinze Jr or Jennifer Love Hewitt) is Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrays Helen, the token blonde who is terrorised the most. Overall, three stars. It's nowhere near as witty and scary as Scream, but there are a few creepy moments. See if you like Buffy star Sarah, slasher movies, or films about a guy with a big hook. Not a bad film, it tries to bring about a nostalgia to it in terms of old skool teen screamer movies. The cast is actually really good but the whole raincoat guy with the hook thing was a bit much. I guess the whole point was to bring about the urban legend and make it a reality within this film.

It is good and so is the second one but I just got finished watching the last one of this trilogy and it is retarded. None of the original cast is there and people get really dumb. I mean, like the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre you know, there is 20 miles of open land all around and some guy with a limp is chasing you so you run around a house three times? Well I don't mean to knock TCM in this review because it had some good parts. I just hope they do not let Rob Zombie direct "I think we are screwed this summer" because it would really cause me to hurl. Jennifer Love Hewitt is in this and it was after she dumped Carson Daly, I like the way she said he was a jerk, she did not use that language but you know what I am saying, I believe in treating people with respect and the fact Daly did not realize what he had was typical of his type. Well have fun out there in TVland and enjoy finding out what happens to these kiddies that summer! August 20, 2007
