First off, I must show an obvious bias toward this movie. The setting is Wabasha, Minnesota. It IS NOT a fictional place. It is halfway between St. Paul, MN and LaCrosse, WI on US-61, which is one of the most scenic highways in America, especially in the autumn. My mother was raised in Wabasha, and my late father born and raised 15 miles away in Lake City, which is where my mother lives today. It is where I actually call my "home away from home." So of course, there are many aspects of the movie I can personally relate to, like the real Slippery's in Wabasha, which in real life is much classier than a throw-your-peanut-shells-on-the-floor tavern. The people living in this area are very down to earth and friendly, and for many, fishing and snowmobiling in winter is a way of life as portrayed in this movie.

Now considering these facts, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon truly exemplify the persona of real life in Wabasha, with the twist being these two very schmucky widowers who having known each other since childhood, living next door to each other in their later years, and still NEVER have gotten along with each other. That's when the lovely Ann Margaret moves into the house across the street while accepting a faculty position at Winona State University (where my late father actually went to college) some 30 miles away. This sends the two "grumpys" into an infatuated tizzy, and they both put on their best impression in schmoozing her, with Jack Lemmon in the end finally winning out. The movie is complete with off-the-wall pranks and schmucky humor, and Burgess Meredith, in his second-to-last acting role, is an absolute scream with his antics. Some of the language contained herein is rather vulgar, and I would not recommend anyone younger than age 17 to watch it unless with a parent. January 4, 2009

Grumpy Old Men is an excellent comedy and definitely worth the purchase price for great entertainment. The interaction between Jack Lemmon and Walter Matrhau borders on genius. These two characters are elderly neighbors who compete as ice fisherman and for the attention and affection of an attractive newcomer to the neighborhood, Ann Margaret. It is a hilarious madcap adventure. November 28, 2008

Who would have ever thought that two really old guys could be so outrageously funny. Sorry, but now that they're gone, I can't think of anyone (or two) who could compare to this team. There're so many reasons I love this movie, it's touching, snowy, and funny as hell.

One of my favorite scenes is where Max and John try to clean up and dress to impress Ariel the former Berkeley professor, to the tune "I'm Too Sexy." Too funny. And I nearly fell off my chair laughing when John was trying to watch television and kept losing the channel because Max was changing the channels on him with his remote from his own house! There are so many funny scenes, it's amazing. I never get tired of watching this movie. It's a good film to watch when you're feeling low because you WILL laugh.Looks like Chuck's taking old one eye to the optometrist! Too bleepin funny...

Ok, I love this movie. On the surface it is not one that would necessarily appeal to me right off the bat, but the combination of Lemmon and Matthau is hard to beat. They were brilliant in the "Odd Couple" and they are brilliant in this film. Their chemistry was undeniable and I love watching two incredible comedic actors that do not have to resort to cursing and overy bawdy humor. This film is a great example of not only their chemistry but their individual comic genius. Oh, and the outtakes of Burgess Meridith...well, you just have to watch! May 12, 2007
